About Course

This course provides a practical, skill-based introduction to essential ophthalmic and optical instruments used in optometry. Through four focused modules, students develop core competencies in assembling and troubleshooting optical setups using the trial box, performing objective refraction via retinoscopy, conducting systematic retinal examinations with a direct ophthalmoscope, and carrying out detailed anterior segment assessments using a slit lamp.

The curriculum emphasizes hands-on clinical application, enabling students to measure basic optical properties, interpret clinical reflexes, and recognize normal ocular anatomy. By integrating foundational theory with supervised practical training, the course equips learners with the skills necessary for real-world clinical and technical practice in optometry and vision sciences.

Authorship and Attribution

This course has been curated by Riphah International University faculty and staff using publicly available third-party content and Open Educational Resources (OER) for self-paced learning. Learners will engage with curated open-access materials to achieve the course learning outcomes. All third-party content is used under open-access or fair-use policies, while any original materials are developed specifically for this learning experience.

What You'll Learn

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply hands-on skills to assemble, align, measure, and troubleshoot basic optical setups using core optical components.
  • Perform objective refraction by analysing retinoscopy reflexes to determine the type and magnitude of refractive error.
  • Conduct a systematic fundus examination using a direct ophthalmoscope to observe and identify normal retinal anatomy.
  • Carry out a detailed anterior segment examination using a slit lamp with proper patient positioning, illumination, and magnification control.

Prerequisites

Before beginning this course, learners are expected to have:

  • Active enrollment in a BS Optometry or Optometry & Orthoptics program.

       Foundational knowledge of:

  • Basic visual sciences and eye structure
  • Fundamentals of light behaviour and optical principles

Basic familiarity with standard optometric instruments, including the retinoscope and slit lamp.

Who Can Take This Course?

This course is designed for optometry students, vision science learners, optical engineers, biomedical instrument specialists, and physics graduates who aim to develop expertise in the design, alignment, and practical application of optical systems used in scientific and medical instruments.
